Manganese sulfate

What is Manganese Sulfate?

Manganese sulfate is one of the most widely used sulfates that has various applications, including in agriculture and industry.
With the chemical formula MnSO4.nH2O, it has the ability to retain 1 to 7 water molecules in its crystal structure.
Dry manganese sulfate is white (pale pink) and its seven-aqueous composition forms pale pink crystals.
Manganese is one of the elements that is needed in small amounts in the body to produce the enzyme reductase.
Increasing the amount of soluble manganese in the blood disrupts nerve cells and neurons.

Description

Manganese is the twelfth most abundant element in the earth’s crust, found in significant amounts in mines as oxidized, silicate, and carbonate minerals.
Its most important minerals are pyrolocytes or pyrolosites (MnO2), psilomelans (Mn5O10 (Ba, H2O) 2), rhodocytes (MnCO3), manganese (MnO (OH)) and cryptomlans (K (Mn4 +, Mn2 +) 8O16).
Manganese minerals are often associated with iron, and in some iron ore mines, manganese is seen as an accompanying element.
Manganese sulfate is the most widely used synthetic compound containing the element manganese and due to its complete solubility in water,
and the possibility of absorption by plants, has a large market in the field of chemicals.

Manganese sulfate production method

The most important raw material for the supply of manganese in the production of sulfate and other manganese compounds is mineral manganese dioxide (MnO2) or pyrolosite.
This black material must be crushed and pulverized after extraction from the mine to be ready for leaching operations in steel, polyethylene or fiberglass coated tanks.
By adding water and manganese dioxide powder to the tank,
creating proper agitation and blowing sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas resulting from burning elemental sulfur into the solution and reducing manganese dioxide suspended in water,
It can be converted to soluble manganese sulfate.
(The reason for using sulfur dioxide gas instead of direct reaction of pyrolosite with sulfuric acid is the lack of direct dissolution of this mineral in sulfuric acid).
After the dissolution operation, the resulting solution is filtered to separate the insoluble material from it and then the resulting clear solution is concentrated and after cooling,
seven aqueous manganese sulfate crystals are formed.
The resulting solution can also be dried using a spray dryer and dry manganese sulfate powder (single water) can be obtained.
To perform this process, it should be noted that sulfur dioxide gas is very toxic and its inhalation can lead to bleeding in the respiratory tract,
suffocation, burning eyes and death. Another method of dissolving manganese dioxide is to use strong chemical reductants such as oxalic acid.
With the chemical formula C2H2O4 or sodium azide with the chemical formula NaN3, in the presence of sulfuric acid.
Of course, these methods will be more expensive than dissolving with sulfur dioxide gas.
The most common impurities with manganese sulfate are iron, cobalt, nickel, arsenic and cadmium, which can be treated with suitable precipitators.
Isolate during production to obtain purer manganese sulfate.
Applying heat above 850 ° C to manganese sulfate decomposes it into sulfur dioxide and manganese dioxide.
Its reaction with sodium carbonate will also produce manganese carbonate and sodium sulfate.
