What is aluminum sulfate?

Aluminum sulfate is a mineral (inorganic) with the chemical formula Al2 (SO4) 3 and is white (pure type) to gray (impure type).
And is one of the most widely used aluminum compounds.
Aluminum sulfate can crystallize as a double salt with other cations such as ammonium or potassium ions and form aluminum alum with the chemical formula NH4Al (SO4) 2.
The trivalent oxidation number of aluminum ions makes it highly capable of clotting colloids in water and effluents containing colloidal suspended particles such as factory effluents.
It has become paper, dye, textile and food and therefore this material along with polyaluminum chloride (PAC) has become one of the most widely used materials in water and wastewater treatment.

Method of production of aluminum sulfate

Pure aluminum sulfate is produced by direct reaction of sulfuric acid diluted with aluminum hydroxide or gamma phase aluminum oxide.
This reaction is highly exothermic and is accompanied by intense production of water vapor, and its product is suitable for water and wastewater treatment.
The largest producer of aluminum hydroxide in Iran is Jajarm Alumina Company.
Aluminum hydroxide from aluminum plating industries (caustic soda) can be used to produce lower quality aluminum sulfate for industrial use.
Another method of producing aluminum sulfate is the calcination of bauxite calcined or bulkite.
To produce alum, it should be added to aqueous solution of concentrated aluminum sulfate, ammonium sulfate or potassium sulfate to form alum crystals slowly.
